Two Cases of Death from Suffocation

In August 1893, the Suburban Police, Tlianab Entally, brought the body of a male child about three years old for medico-legal examination. The police reported that the child was suffocated by attempting to swallow a gooseberry. He was taken to a neighbouring dispensary, but before any medical aid could be given, life was extinct. The body was that of a fine healthy child. On opening the cavity of the mouth a gooseberry was found saddling 011 the entrance of the trachea and thus completely blocking the air passage. O11 examining the berry it was found to have been bevelled on two sides looking like a saddle, and its tough fleshy pulp was entire and served the purpose of a ball-valve. ?
